We are in the midst of an in-depth School Travel Planning project in partnership with Lawrence Grassi Middle School (LGMS), the Town of Canmore and the Alberta Traffic Safety Fund. The data collection is complete and an action plan has been created with the specific goal of improving the school journey and encouraging more children to walk or wheel to school. School travel planning has had much success in increasing children’s physical and mental fitness and reducing traffic congestion and emissions at school across the nation.
Now the implementation phase begins. Over the course of the summer, a number of the action items will be completed, including improvements to the intersection in front of LGMS (at 7th Ave and 6th St), improvements to the route to school from Teepee Town, improvements to the roundabout at Bow Valley Trail and Kananaskis Way, and improvements to the crossings at Rundle Crescent.
The bike parking in the bike corral at the rear of the school was improved by the Town of Canmore in June and additional bike racks will be placed in front of the school for the start of the new school year in September 2017.
